Professor Rappe and second year graduate student Aaliyah Khan visited the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) to present a seminar on research opportunities in the Rappe group and at the University of Pennsylvania and to discuss the graduate school process with UMBC students. Professor Rappe led a lunch time seminar where he talked about research in the group with energy applications including catalysis and integrated energy devices. Professor Rappe opened up about the human side of research processes, showing ways that anyone can find a path forward into science and research. This was followed by an informal session led by Aaliyah Khan where the topic was diversity, equity, and inclusion in graduate school. The questions asked by the UMBC students covered an array of subjects such as the graduate school application process, the challenges of being a minority in STEM, time, and stress management in graduate school, and graduate school selection.
