80 6th graders traveled to the University of Washington Seattle on Monday March 18, 2024. Joined by their science teacher and several colleagues, this event was jointly hosted by IMOD, the Clean Energy Institute (CEI) and the UW Molecular Engineering Materials Center (MEM-C).

The students toured the research labs, explored the Astronomy Planetarium, the Mo Li Lab, the Yankowitz Lab and the A3D3 Lab. But they didn’t just tour the labs! Students were given the chance to take part in hands-on interactive activities that explored some of the scientific concepts being developed in these cutting edge labs.

IMOD showcased its Glow Paper and the Making Light activities, that describe some of the key concepts that under optoelectronics research. Students explored the relative energies of different colors of light by making LEDS light up, and experimented with which color LED would make a specific glow paper glow.

Students were able to make connections between energy and color, and how this relates to the frequency of waves.
