GEAR UP Achievers and IMOD / CEI hosted 60 students from 8 different high schools in King County. These priority students (low-income and/or URM in STEM) collectively toured 14 STEM lab spaces on campus. In addition, the group as a whole was introduced to STEM at UW via the chemistry department Hakme Lee, Demonstration Technician, Chemistry Dept. They also heard an introduction by Rickey Hall, Vice President of Minority Affairs and Diversity at UW. At the end of the day four students – Rayne Anderson – IMOD (Gamelin), Connor Dalton (Gamelin), Greg Guymon – IMOD (MacKenzie) and Hunter Ripberger – IMOD (Cossairt) led the whole group in a light/quantum activity from IMOD.
This was possible by the coalition of STEM Labs on campus that IMOD and CEI spearheaded organizing. Together we are able to accommodate large groups of students. We focus on priority students.
