This was the first of a series of sessions on “Getting the Job” that was offered to IMOD graduate students & postdocs. The goal is to equip students for potential transitions to industry either during internships or after the graduate school experience. This session focused on how to use networking to find the types of jobs you are interested in and the people who can help you get them. Dr. Joseph Barber from the career center at UPenn led the session, providing practical and specific tips for IMOD members.

Session Description:

Integrating networking into your industry job search process

As you explore different career opportunities in industry, networking can play a role in helping you create a strong, confident professional narrative as part of your application materials and job interviews. In this session, we will cover how networking can help you to 1) understand the types of roles you hope to be applying for, 2) identify the skills and knowledge that are sought by hiring managers, and 3) develop an authentic narrative that answers the question “why this job, why this organization?” that you can use in your cover letters. We will explore how LinkedIn can help you make connections to get answers to your career questions, and how you can leverage what you learn to build your own professional research brand.
