IMOD Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Fellow
One of IMOD’s key goals is to broaden the participation of underrepresented groups in STEM by inspiring and empowering a diverse set of scholars. IMOD shares the National Science Board’s urgency with respect to the need to engage all Americans in STEM. To this end, IMOD seeks to create a diverse and inclusive research team, and empower its members to champion diversity and equity in all areas. Therefore, IMOD is currently accepting applications the IMOD Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Fellow (DEI-Fellow). The DEI-Fellow position is ideal for graduate students or postdoctoral scholars interested in mechanisms to broaden participation in STEM subjects and strategies to build an inclusive team culture. This position would also be a great opportunity for students wishing to build a portfolio of broader impact accomplishments and participate in events focused on DEI as well as connect with experts in this area.
The DEI-Fellow will work closely with the IMOD Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (D-DEI), the Communications Director, and other IMOD Fellows to respond to public requests for outreach visits, arrange logistics, recruit IMOD students as volunteers, and attend events. The DEI-Fellow will assist in preparing professional development for IMOD members, including culturally responsive mentoring and distributing articles and new items that can raise awareness and comfort with tackling DEI issues. The DEI-Fellow, working closely with the D-DEI, will also help advance IMOD’s mission by networking with IMOD’s partners to help ensure that the materials and activities developed and delivered by IMOD do so in ways that best serve the needs of those partners, thus promoting successful and long-term outreach efforts to underserved audiences nationally. An important part of the DEI-Fellow’s responsibilities will be to support the development of IMOD’s network with MSIs, identifying contacts and building relationships to enhance dissemination of IMOD opportunities to a broad group of students, as well as expand recruiting and applications for the REU program as well as IMOD’s graduate and postdoctoral scholars.
The maximum time commitment for this position is 20 hours per week. Work schedule is flexible, though attendance at specific events during and outside of business hours is expected. The funding is available to any student at an IMOD-participating institution, and is purely additive with existing funding to that institution if there is overlap with any currently funded research group.
Selection Criteria & Application Process
Candidates with a demonstrated engagement and commitment to the broader mission of IMOD and relevant experience with DEI activities are eligible to apply. Students should have a background in a science, engineering, or IMOD-related field. DEI-Fellows will serve for a minimum of 2 quarters, but preferably for a year.
